South Sudan’s election commission has announced that it will begin registration of voters in June in preparation for elections scheduled for December 2024.
“We as a commission we are saying that targeting the Elections to take place should be in June, that’s where the registration of voters will begin, why? the law says registration must begin since months before.”Said the chairperson, South Sudan election Commission, Abednego Akok Kachuol.
The commission made the announcement in Juba on Tuesday.
South Sudan’s first ever election since the country attained independence in 2011 is scheduled for December this year however, the unity government is divided on whether or not elections should go ahead as planned.
The group led by president Salva Kiir insists the polls should go ahead scheduled but the largest opposition group led by first vice president Riek Machar says census, repatriation of refugees, security sector reforms have to be completed before the polls.
