Parties validate 5 key security sector working documents

The chief of staff for the Reconstituted Joint Monitoring and Evaluation Commission (RJMEC), Berhanu Kebede on Thursday expressed optimism on the security sector reforms after the Strategic Defense and Security Review Board validated five strategic security sector documents.

“I am optimistic that today’s achievement will create fresh momentum and impetus to the implementation of critical pending tasks of the agreement, particularly the transitional security arrangements,” said Kebede during the closing of the five-day workshop on security sector review at Crown hotel in Juba.

He urged the Strategic Defense and Security Review Board to expedite the process going forward, and also appealed to the revitalized government of national unity (RTGONU) to expeditiously adopt and implement these documents which will lay a firm foundation for a professional armed forces and security in South Sudan.

The five documents validated by the Strategic Defense and Security Review Board include Strategic Security Assessment, Security Policy Framework, Revised Defense Policy, Transformation Roadmap and White Paper on Defense and Security.

Angelina Jany Teny, the National Minister of Interior who also doubles as the Chairperson of the Strategic Defense and Security Review Board, said they remain committed to bring stability across the country.

“The Strategic Defense and Security Review Board would like to assure the people of South Sudan of it’s commitment to security sector transformation, that will finally bring lasting stability, peace, economic development and prosperity to the people of South Sudan,” said Teny.

South Sudan is yet to complete the graduation of the 83,000 unified forces spelled out in the 2018 revitalized peace agreement.
