Authorities of Northern Bahr El Ghazal state on Tuesday launched tree planting campaign that aims to plant more than 5,000 trees in the state in order to mitigate climate change.
Anei Deng Akok, the state minister for agriculture and forestry said during the launch of the campaign at freedom square in Aweil town that they are going to plant mango, guava, avocado and lemon trees among others.
“We are planting the trees to ensure that all the trees that have been cut be replaced with these ones,” Akok said, adding that each household will have to participate in this initiative.
He said they are working together with the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization and other international partners who are providing them with seedlings which they are giving out free of charge to residents.
For his part, the Governor of Northern Bahr El Ghazal state, Tong Aken Ngor said trees will be planted along the main roads leading to the five counties.
“I want to publicize it here that every road leading to the counties should be seen green, we are glad that every household will have to plant trees such as mango, guava and lemon,” he said.
