Government assessing plight of displaced people in Tambura violence

The Relief Rehabilitation Commission (RRC) in Western Equatoria State is currently assessing the exact number of people displaced in the ongoing violent clashes in Tambura County, where the United Nations estimated 17,000 people displaced.

Alex Digi, the Press Secretary for the Governor of Western Equatoria State, Alfred Futuyo Karaba revealed that they currently not aware of the exact number of people displaced because the assessment is still going on.

He however, disclosed that the most of the people displaced are sheltering outside a temporary base of UN peacekeepers, church compound, army barracks and in neighboring Nagero County and Wau of Western Bahr el Ghazel.

The Balanda militia with alleged support from Sudan People’s Liberation Army-in opposition (SPLA-IO) and the Avungura-led militia allegedly backed by South Sudan People’s Defense Forces (SSPDF) have been fighting since June 2021 in Tambura.

Digi said that South Sudan People’s Defense Force (SSPDF) have already been deployed to control the situation.

He said that they are working hard to restore calm to enable the displaced persons to return home, adding that they need humanitarian support following the massive destruction of houses and properties.
