The Unity State Police Commissioner Maj. Gen Gordon Machar Yieh on Friday promised to promote the rights of journalists to access information without hindrance.

Machar said journalists have right to access information under article 32 and 26 of the 2011 South Sudan transitional constitution.

The police chief also discussed issues to do with harassment, detention and arrest of journalists in Unity state with members of the Union of Journalists in South Sudan (UJOSS).

Machar said his office will ensure journalists are not harassed during coverage of government events and community events.

“As we have conducted this wonderful meeting today, please report any harassment, detention and any obstruction during your work,” he said.

The meeting was attended by 18 journalists and police officers from the criminal investigation department.
