National Members of parliament in Northern Bahr El Ghazal State have promised to hold the executive accountable in terms of service delivery.
Nyanut Garang, a woman MP who represents the opposition Sudan People’s Liberation Movement –in opposition (SPLM-IO) said that MPs are obliged to speak on behalf of the rural people they represent while in the national legislative assembly.
“In the national legislative assembly we talk about what people in the rural villages face, the party affiliation and loyalties are discussed in the party institution but not in the assembly. So we are learning a lot about how we have to cooperate with the executive and how we can leave divisive politics in the house,” she told Juba Echo in Aweil town on Thursday.
The MPs are attending a three- day workshop organized by the national government with support from United Nation Development Programme (UNDP).
MP Garang Mawien said during the course of the training that they are learning how to work in the best interest of the people they represent.
“We attended the workshop to learn how we can work with the executive and keep checking them on how they are implementing the policies. As lawmakers we don’t have to leave the executive to do anything without checking them,” Garang said.
Mawein added that as people who speak on behalf of the voiceless, they have seen that political parties are working together as per the extended transitional roadmap of the signed 2018 revitalized peace agreement.
“We shall work hard to address the problems of our people. The public issues are the prime matters that we have to speak out to get addressed. There is no way we keep silent without letting the executive know what is itching the people,” he said.
