Kiir calls for economic conference to find solutions to ailing economy

President Salva Kiir Mayardit on Monday ordered the Ministry of Finance to hold national economic conference to help devise solutions to mitigate the prevailing economic crisis.

“I am today directing the Ministry of Finance and Planning to organize South Sudan National Economic Conference that will complement the ongoing public finance management reform,” Kiir said during the opening of the first session of the Transitional National Legislative Assembly in Juba on Monday.

The TNLA went on recess on December 15th 2022. The health of the economy which continues to deteriorate is expected to be part of the main agenda of the TNLA as hinted by Kiir.

Kiir said the objective of the economic conference will be to address the current economic crisis.

“The recommendations from the conference will help us chart the way forward on structural reforms, we need to undertake to revive our economy,” he said.

Peter Lomude, Chairperson of the specialized committee of the constituency development fund (CDF) said the economic conference is coming at a time when the country is facing economic difficulties.

“The call by H.E President to hold an economic conference come at a time our economy is facing a very serious challenge and we have seen what is happening in the market,” Lomude said.

Juol Nhomngek Daniel, MP representing Cueibet County of Lakes State said the conference will provide opportunity for experts to provide urgent solutions to resolve the economic crisis.

“If we can hold such a conference different groups or experts will come to tell us exactly how to approach such conditions because it has never happened in other countries,” Nhomngek said.

Morris Madut Kon, Head of the economics department at the University of Juba said the conference will bring together different government institutions to forge ways to coordinate.

“One of the most important reasons for this national economic conference is to bring all stake-holders together and chart a common way forward so that there is coordination among institutions of the government as far as the economy is concerned,” Madut said.
