President Salva Kiir recently held discussion with governors of the 10 states and Chief Administrators on the challenges facing the education sector and ways to improving it.
President Kiir during the meeting held over the weekend in Juba, urged all the leaders present to join hands to transform the education sector in order to ensure access to quality education for all children.
“We already know the quality of education we want for our children, but we cannot achieve it without qualified teachers, so we have created a system that ensures we recruit and train existing teachers who will provide our children with quality education services,” Awut Deng Acuil, the National Minister of General Education and Instruction said.
She disclosed that government is working to increase teachers’ salaries by 140 percent in the recently passed 2021/22 fiscal budget.
Adding that this move will help retain and motivate teachers.
She informed the governors that the national government has agreed to a six month cash conditional transfers to the 10 states, and three Administrative Areas to pay the salaries of the civil servants and operation costs of the schools.
Acuil cautioned politicians to refrain from inciting teachers to go on strike over delayed salaries and allowances.
Hussein Abdelbagi Akol, the Vice President for Service Delivery Cluster, advised state governments to cooperate with the national government to systematically address the challenges that are affecting education.
