The National Ministry of General Education and Instruction has reverted to the old academic calendar pre-COVID-19 that operated from February to December annually.
“I am pleased to inform you that the Ministry of General Education and Instruction has decided to revert to the old academic calendar pre-COVID-19 that operated from February to December,” said a circular issued on Tuesday in Juba by Kuyok Abol Kuyok, the Undersecretary in the Ministry of General Education and Instruction.
The outbreak of COVID-19 in early 2020 forced the government to revise the academic calendar which commenced in May 2021 to February 2022.
This was after millions of children stopped learning due to preventive health measures imposed by the government then against spread of COVID-19.
Kuyok said that the new academic calendar will commence on Monday 6th of February and ends on Friday 22nd December 2023.
He urged the Director General in the Ministry of General Education and Instruction to make public announcements across the counties of the 10 states and three Administrative Areas.
Kuyok said that they will close schools for a week to allow pupils sit for the Primary Leaving Certificate Examinations and two weeks for the Secondary Education Certificate respectively.
“It’s important that all schools adhere to the calendar, any school found in its breach will be panelized,” he said.
“We expect you to conduct back learning campaigns in your state and administrative areas. If you have any queries please do not hesitate to contact us,” said Kuyok.
