By Hou Akot Hou

The Aweil municipal council authorities have ordered residents to dig pit latrines in their homes to deter open defecation which is posing health risks to lives.

Dut Mou Majok, the Mayopr of Aweil town said people defecate and urinate in open spaces which pollutes the environment and puts many lives at risk.

“The rainy season is approaching and it is likely that diseases like cholera may spread,” Majok told Juba Echo in Aweil town on Thursday.

He said his team will be inspecting homes to ensure they have pit latrines.

“We are going to be moving in all houses to see to it that the order is implemented. We want to ensure that open defecation is prevented,” Majok said.

Ngor Mawien, a resident of Aweil town said that cases of water-borne diseases such as cholera and typhoid are on the rise.

“You can get people defecating in the open in most of the residential areas in Aweil. If the order is implemented by the authorities then it is going to prevent people from defecating anywhere,” Mawien said.
