The Executive Director of Community Empowerment for Progress Organization (CEPO) Edmund Yakani on Thursday encouraged President Salva Kiir to assent to all bills and protocols before his office before the end of this year.
“Community Empowerment for Progress Organization is impressed by these updates and the long awaited process for learning about the status of the signing of bills, regional protocols and international conventions. Timely signing of H.E the President of these bills, protocols and international conventions will be a great year closing gift for the country,” said Yakani in a statement issued in Juba.
This came in the wake of the recent remarks by Martin Elias Lomuro, the Minister of Cabinet Affairs before the Reconstituted Joint Monitoring Evaluation Commission ( RJMEC) alluding to the President signing ten bills before him.
The bills and protocols awaiting Presidential assent include, the Protocol on Human and People Rights, Maputo Protocol (Rights of Women in Africa), International Convention on Political and Civil Rights, International Convention on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights, International Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, National Police Services Act and Constitution -Making Process Act, Wildlife Bill, and the Transitional Constitution of the Republic of South Sudan Amended Bill 2022.
In addition, other key things are the Convention on Prohibition of the Development, Production, Stockpiling and Destruction of Bacterial or Biological and Toxin Weapons and Destruction Bill 2022.
“Following the agreed upon timeline for the implementation of the adopted roadmap for the R-ARCSS, pending tasks implementation within the extended 24 months, it is essential that H.E. the President sign these bills, protocols and conventions in December 2022 before January, 2023,” said Yakani.
Yakani said that signing of these pending critical bills and protocols will demonstrate political will on the President’s part.
He said that the political situation facing the country requires sense of political urgency for delivering the essential pending tasks of the R-ARCSS.
“The political urgency is mainly around having the political will for genuine implementation of the R-ARCSS, and supporting the deliverance of the pending tasks timely and effectively,” said Yakani.
