MPs call on government to arrest armed youth who attacked Duk County

The chairperson of the parliamentary caucus for Bor, Duk and Twic East Counties in the Transitional National Legislative Assembly, Deng Dau Deng Malek has called on the national and state governments to help identify and arrest youth suspected to have attacked Poktap town in Duk County on January 5th 2024.

Malek said in a statement on Saturday that they want the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) to also help in evacuation of the wounded to Juba for treatment and to engage authorities in Greater Pibor Administrative Area (GPAA) to identify the culprits.

“The caucus calls for restraint s from its peace loving constituents and urge them to give relevant government institutions a chance to apprehend the current security situation in our 3 counties,” he said.

On January 5, 2024, suspected armed youth from Greater Pibor Administrative Area raided more than 7,000 cows in Poktap town, leaving about 28 people killed and 18 others wounded.

Malek revealed that the chiefs of Duk County have petitioned the Jonglei state authorities on the matter, adding that the aggression was committed by specific group of armed youth known as Kurenen from Gumuruk are of GPAA. “Since this aggression was committed by a specific group known as kurenen from Gumuruk, the chiefs of Duk have launched a criminal case in Jonglei state head quarter against these culprits and the caucus resolved to engage the government legal entities to provide all necessary support to this endeav
