The government on Thursday launched labor market information system to monitor and support unemployed South Sudanese to acquire jobs in the country.
Hussein Abdelbagi Akol, the Vice President for Service Cluster said during the launching ceremony held in Juba that the labor market information system will help them to design program that will encourage human resource development and support employment growth.
“There is no any other means for the government to improve the state of human development but through labor market information system, we need Labor market information system in order to identify system and design program that will encourage human resource development and support employment growth over the long term,” said Akol.
He said the system will support the government, private sector and partners to understand the South Sudan labor market.
A labor market survey conducted in Juba by the ministry of labor with support from the International Organization for Migration (IOM) indicated that the unemployment rate stands at 80 percent.
Julius Tabuley Daniel, the Deputy Minister of Public Services and Human Resource Development, said the labor market information system will help the government to address challenges of employment.
“Having Labor market information system is a great step in equipping the entire government with capacity to be able to take decision based on timely and accurate information, it will help government to formulate policies that will address challenges being face in the labor market,” he said.
John McCue, the Chief of Mission for IOM said South Sudan said the labor market information system will facilitate employment opportunities.
“The labor market information system strives to accelerate achievement of sustainable development goals, it will help to facilitate labor migration and employment opportunities,” said McCue.
James Hoth Mai, the National Minister of Labor said they are working to meet regional commitments on migration governance, adding that the development of labor market information system is vital for creating employment opportunities.
“We are working with other East Africa community member countries and beyond to meet our global and regional commitment on migration governance despite the limited resources to address conflicting priorities,” said Mai.
“The system consist of labor demand, labor supply and policy framework, the development of labor market information system is vital for formulating active labor market policies suitable for creating employment for all, limiting labor migration and increasing skilled labor migration,” he added.
