The Governor of Northern Bahr El Gazal state,Tong Aken Ngor has called on members of the state legislative assembly to work to enact laws to help protect and conserve forests.
Aken was addressing the lawmakers on Wednesday during the reopening of the state assembly in Aweil town.
“We have planted 1 million trees recently and I have instructed the ministry of agriculture that is liaising with the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) to plant trees to contribute to the attraction of rainfall,” he said.
Northern Bahr El Ghazal state is one of the food insecure states in South Sudan. It has been experiencing climatic shocks such as floods and dry spells since 2020.
Aken also noted that his administration has overseen the restoration of mobile telecommunication network in the counties such as Majok-Yithiou, Malith-Alek-Yai, Warguet and Awoda areas.
On her part, the Speaker of the Northern Bahr El Ghazal state assembly, Achol William Amuoi appealed to the cabinet to share their policies with lawmakers.
“Hon. Governor, keenly work with your executive members so that they present their ministerial policies to allow us to deliberate on their plans and see how they can be enacted as policies,” she said.
Northern Bhar El Ghazal state assembly has been on recess for the past three months.
