Europe Day, held on 9th May every year celebrates peace and unity in Europe. The date marks the Anniversary of the historic ‘Schuman declaration’ that set out his idea for a new form of political cooperation in Europe, which would make war between Europe’s nations unthinkable. Schuman’s proposal is considered to be the beginning of what is now the European Union.
In continued celebration of Europe Day in South Sudan, the European Union Delegation in South Sudan in collaboration with youth led and youth serving organizations on 5th May 2023 hosted a special edition of Europe Day With the Youth at Scenius Hub featuring An Evening With Amb. Timo Olkkonen-Head of EU Delegation in South Sudan on: Youth Engagement and EU-Africa Cooperation.
This special edition was also a celebration of culture, art, music, poetry and innovation with live performances from young South Sudanese musicians and poets, an art exhibition by Raila Akur and a photo Exhibition by Photographer Adam Ibrahim entitled “Stories of Resilience” The event was premised on the shared interest of creating more open knowledge and freely accessible information sources especially for the youth in South Sudan and was also an an important learning opportunity for how the European Union is supporting peace and democracy in South Sudan through its development cooperation and humanitarian aid in the Country.
The event also featured other Ambassadors from Team Europe in South Sudan which included Amb. Marjan Shippers from the Netherlands, Mr. Simon Ruf- Acting Head of Mission from Germany and other diplomats from Switzerland and Ms. Ritah Samantha 2nd Runner Up in the Miss LITTLE Africa 2023 who planted trees together with the Ambassadors.
