The Speaker of Parliament at the Transitional National Assembly Jemma Nunu Kumba have said the 900 mega watt power plant project along the Nile has not yet been tabled before parliament.
Nunu Kumba made the speech during the donation of a power generator for the sustainability of the National assembly for power in Juba Thursday evening.
“When I was in the ministry of electricity, I was working on this project to develop a 900 mega watt hydro electric power on the Nile at Fulla,”
“This project I think when I left the ministry is still an option that the government is looking at,” she said.
She added that they had wished to buy and import electricity from the East African region, which the World Bank was going to finance work on the feasibility studies
“I do not think the government has barked off from this. I think is a matter of time because you know we were had gone through a 5 year of setback by instability and therefore most of the projects could not go ahead,” she said.
Nunu Kumba said the country would in future own a hydropower plant, which will provide cheaper and affordable electricity for the citizens.
“The power are using is generated by the same generator that we are using which the tariffs are very high. We pay a lot of money to get the city power but we have no option but just to use the city power,” she said.
She said the action for the initiation of the project would be from the executive to bring their proposal to the parliament to be approved.
“We as the representative of the people, we would like to have electricity which is a cheaper electricity for our citizens which is a concern for us as the members of parliament,” she said.
