The Executive Director for Community Empowerment for Progress Organization (CEPO) has called on the national ministry of finance to speed up release of funds to facilitate the constitutional making process and reconstitution of the political parties’ council.
“In terms of priorities, it is the political milestones which are important for them to deliver, and among the political milestones is the reconstitution of political parties’ council, so that political parties will register and the reconstitution of national constitution review commission and formation of constitution drafting committee,” said Edmund Yakani in an interview with the Juba Echo in Juba on Friday.
He said the continued delay to release critical funding for the 2018 revitalized peace agreement is interrupting the timely implementation of the peace agreement.
“They really need to put more effort into issues of timely and adequate funding of the agreement, it is very important that they should fund the key milestones to the agreement because the agreement is coming to an end,” said Yakani.
When contacted by this reporter for comment on his known phone number, Agok Makur, the Deputy Minister of Finance did not reply our calls.
Yakani said the mistakes committed during the previous transitional period should be avoided during the ongoing two-year extended transitional period.
He added that other key priorities include redeploying of the recently graduated unified forces.
“The first batch of unified forces are graduated, but they are not redeployed, there is need to take timely redeployment of unified forces,” said Yakani.
The transitional unity government has so far graduated more than 52,000 unified forces in mostly Greater Equatoria region, but delay in their redeployment is holding back training of the second batch.
In total, 83,000 unified forces are supposed to be graduated under the peace agreement to take charge of security.
These forces include police, army, prisons, intelligence, and wild life.
