President Salva Kiir has launched the construction of the second phase of Juba-Bahr El Ghazal road after completion of the 63 km Juba-Terekeka section.
“Our people need services and services will not come without roads, if we finish this road we will not have problem again,” said Kiir.
He was speaking during the launch on Monday of the construction of the 216 km Minkaman-Awerial-Rumbek section of the road in Awerial County of Lakes State.
He urged the local population to desist from harming any of the workers of Chinese firm Shandong Hi-Speed Co.Ltd (SDHS).
In May 2021, a Chinese national and his South Sudanese colleague were killed around Jebel Ladu while working on the Juba-Terekeka section of the road.
Kiir also urged youth of Lakes State to end killing each other and instead be peacemakers.
He cautioned the local masses that without peace there is no development.
The Governor of Lakes State Rin Tueny Mabor , said the launching of the road construction is key to peace and security in the state.
“Roads are development, peace and security, now life has come because we have a road in the state and it’s going to connect us with other states,” said Mabor.

The Minister of Roads and Bridges Simon Mijok Mijak, said his ministry’s main priority is to connect the whole country with roads.
“We have connected 8 states with the capital Juba, and still struggling with Upper Nile, Unity and the three administrative areas,” said Mijak.
Mijak revealed that in few days to come President kiir will commission 200 km Juba-Bor road and also launch the second phase construction from Bor to Ayod.
