The head of the political section of the Chinese Embassy in Juba, Hou Xiangyu is calling on media/journalists in the country to explore its reporting direction in line with the situation of South Sudan.
The East African country is currently implementing a fragile peace deal signed in 2018 after six years of civil war.
The peace deal has brought relative peace and residents are now trying to build their livelihood.
“We should encourage the media to grow into a constructive force, instead of creating confrontation or widening differences. We need to look at the current difficulties and challenges from the perspective of development.” Said Hou
Mr. Hou was speaking during a breakfast meeting organized by the Union of Journalists of South Sudan (UJOSS) to discuss the role journalists play in peace building.
He urged the other members of the international community to support the media to actively make suggestions for the peaceful development of South Sudan.
“The media should think about the constructive role they can play. At the same time, as international partners, we may have experienced similar problems, and some of our successful experiences are valuable to South Sudan.” He continued.
South Sudan’s media is still at its infancy stage, there is only one Television Station owned by the state known as South Sudan Broadcasting Corporation (SSBC). There is one television channel known as Kiss TV which only covers Juba and focuses on entertainment.
China is currently building studios and offices for South Sudan Broadcasting Corporation.
The country has a number of radio stations, most of them are community radio stations. The United Nations runs one radio station in the country.
There are four daily newspapers written in English, two papers written in Arabic and a few news websites including Juba Echo.
