UNMISS, civil society hold dialogue on peace deal in Unity State

United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) and civil society organizations on Thursday held discussion on the ongoing peace implementation to ascertain the existing challenges as South Sudan heads for elections.

Thijin Yian Kap, the deputy head of civil society organizations in Unity State urged UNMISS and Revitalized Joint Monitoring Evaluation Commission (RJMEC) to engage parties within the transitional government to open up political space.

“UNMISS and RJMEC should engage parties within the transitional unity government to allow freedom of expression and civic engagement at the county levels,” said Yian.

He said the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement led by President Salva Kiir is continuing to limit political space for other political parties to mobilize freely at county levels.

“What are the roles of RJMEC and UNMISS when violations of the peace agreement are taking place in Malakal and Southern Unity state,” said Yian.

The conference was attended by teacher unions, faith-based groups, community leaders and government representatives.

RJMEC officials promised to engage warring parties to allow freedom of political space.
