Survivors of the recent attack by misseriya militia in Warguet Payam of Aweil East County are calling for South Sudan People’s Defense Forces (SSPDF) to be deployed along the disputed border with Sudan.
Marko Mawiir, one of the survivors of last week’s attack that left two local officials killed said on Monday that if SSPDF had been deployed to the area the recent attack could have been prevented.
“I am requesting our authorities to beef up security; many frequent attacks have been ongoing especially from Misseriya. The government can’t keep on saying the land belongs to us and they don’t provide security,” Mawiir told journalists while he received treatment at Aweil Civil Hospital.
Mawiir together with his colleague William Lual managed to escape from the attackers.
The two called on the national government urged to provide food and medical assistance to people displaced from Warguet Payam.
Kiir Yor Lual, the Commissioner of Aweil East County said they the attackers have been identified by authorities in Sudan’s South Kordorfan.
He disclosed that the assailants will be held accountable for the crimes c omitted in Warguet Payam.
In 2022, similar attack by Misseriya militia in Yith padhol area of Northern Bahr El Ghazal State left dozens killed.
Sudan and South Sudan share the longest undemarcated border in Africa.
The border dispute remains the biggest outstanding issue between the two countries since the secession of South Sudan from Sudan in 2011.
