The Ministry of Water Resources in Northern Bhar El Ghazal state last week started distributing pit latrine covers to residents who have dug pit latrines within their homes as was ordered by authorities.
Dut Deng Gabriel, the director general for the ministry of water resources said on Friday that they
targeted 700 residents in Aweil town in Aweil who recently dug pit latrines.
He said that the UN Children’ Fund (UNICEF) provided the pit latrine covers that were distributed.
Deng said they want to end the habit of open defecation which has put the population at risk of
catching cholera and diarrhea.
Adut Garang a resident of Aweil town praised the move by authorities to distribute the pit latrines.
“I would like them to go to the real houses whose names are on the registrar, because some people may take advantage of this and sell the covers,” said Garang.
Most homes in Northern Bahr El Ghazal lack pit latrines as majority of people prefer to help themselves in the bushes.
