Nearly 3,000 South Sudanese who recently returned from neighboring Sudan are in dire need of humanitarian assistance in Aweil town of Northern Bahr el Ghazal State.
This was revealed by Dut Majokdit, Chairperson of the Relief and Rehabilitation Commission (RRC) in Northern Bahr el Ghazal on Friday.
He said returnees who arrived in the first week of January from Darfur are mostly breastfeeding mothers, children, and elderly women.
“The majority of these people are women and children and most of them are breastfeeding mothers and elderly women and they need to be supported,” Majokdit told The Jube Echo in an interview.
“As the government of Northern Bahr el Ghazal, we designated an area for them in Aweil East County and the most important thing for them is shelter, food items, and non-food items such as blankets and jerry cane for water,” he disclosed.
Majokdit urged humanitarian organizations operating in the country and in Northern Bahr el Ghazal to come to the rescue of the returnees.
The returnees were displaced from their homes due to outbreak of the 2013, but were further displaced inside Sudan following resurgence of conflict in Darfur region.
“They decided to return home because of the hardship that they faced from those areas where they were staying in Sudan,” Majokdit said.
According to UN agencies, nearly a million people are living in internally displaced people’s camps in the country and about 2.3 million are living as refugees in neighboring countries.
