The Chinese government will invest 45 million U.S dollars in the second phase expansion and modernization of the Juba Teaching Hospital in South Sudan.
Ma Wenjun, the Charge d’affaires of the Chinese Embassy in South Sudan told journalists on Thursday in Juba.
“This project will cover a total floor area of 16,000 square meters including medical technology building, out-patient building, in-patient building, infectious disease building, administration building and other ancillary facilities,” Ma said.
He added that the Chinese government will also provide some medical equipment to Juba Teaching Hospital to boost health services.
South Sudan and Chinese government in 2021 under the Eighth Ministerial Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) held in Senegal agreed to implement 9 development projects premised on development conditions of South Sudan.
“About months ago, the two sides, Chinese and Ministry of Health of South Sudan signed the agreement for construction of phase two and now Chinese company is making plans for construction of phase two,” Ma said.
Ma added that second phase of Juba Hospital will start in June next year.
In March 2021, China and South Sudan signed a development pact for the expansion and modernization of the Juba Teaching Hospital.
The just concluded Phase 1, included construction of multi-functional facilities, infectious disease division and several Intensive Care Units (ICUs).
