A five-year project to boost agriculture and sustain livelihood has officially been launched in Torit, Eastern Equatoria State with over 296,632 targeted beneficiaries.
The project that will be implemented by the AVSI foundation South Sudan organization is funded by the Kingdom of the Netherlands targeting 4 counties namely Torit, Ikotos, Magwi and Lafon.
Eastern Equatoria State Minister of Animal Resources and Fisheries Mr Angelo William Gerii hailed partners for choosing the state to improve the livelihood of the vulnerable population.
He urged the population to put all their resources into agriculture to eliminate looming hunger.
“I want to thank all the partners for standing with the people of Eastern Equatoria State, I would like to urge our people to do everything possible to work on their farms to end this hunger in our state. Putting all our efforts into agriculture will bring development and economic prosperity,” Gerii said.
The minister pledged government commitment to continue working with different partners to serve the local population.
On his part, the Country representative for AVSI South Sudan Mr Gino Barsella said the project will help to stabilize prices in the local markets.
He said the project targets young people who are very energetic to do the work that will alleviate the suffering of the bigger population.
“As you can see, the project will take many years and we will work with the young people here in South Sudan to ensure they work hard in business, and agriculture and make some impacts in the market. Our government is committed to continue helping the people of South Sudan in this critical time,” says Barsella.
