Unity State officials have announced receiving 441 people fleeing ongoing conflict in neighboring Sudan.
John Juan Bum, the Executive Director of Unity State Relief and Rehabilitation Commission (RRC) said that majority of the arrivals in Lalop (north of Unity State) are South Sudanese followed by Sudanese from Nuba Mountain, and Ethiopian nationals.
“We have confirmed and registered 24 households with 441 individuals and we have relocated them in Rotriah of Lalop North of unity state. We are expecting more people to arrive in Lalop today,” Bum told Juba Echo on Wednesday in Bentiu town.
He said that the displaced South Sudanese had fled conflict during 2013 and 2016 in South Sudan.
Bum said they are expecting more people fleeing conflict in neighboring Sudan to arrive within the next few days as heavy fighting between the Sudan Armed Forces and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces continues.
He said the state government and humanitarian organizations have already prepared ground for the influx of people fleeing conflict across the border.
The violence in Sudan erupted on April 15 following disagreement over the integration period for the Rapid Support Forces within the national army.
The conflict has killed so far 550 people and injured nearly 5000. The majority of Sudanese refugees have fled to neighboring Chad and Egypt.
