South Sudan’s IDP Camp Resorts To Cultural Event For Peace, Unity Building

The leadership of Bentiu IDP camp in unity state have organized a traditional event with support from International organization for Migration’s mental health and psychosocial support department to promote peace and unity among the IDPs and for reconciling groups of youths who have for a while been in conflict with each other.

The camp chairman Mr. John Nhial Ruai told Juba Echo that the main aim of this cultural event which took place at Bentiu IDP camp play ground is to reunite the different youth groups.

He said the cultural event brought together conflicting youths living in Bentiu IDP camp and the host community of Rubkona County and they were cautioned against revenge killings and communal violence.

“The peace making event brought together different conflicting youths we never expected. They danced together, and it was a sign of real peace and unity yesterday in Bentiu IDP camp, and this will continue every Sunday from 4 PM to 5 PM.” Nhial said during an Interview.

Nhial revealed that his leadership will ensure that the youths are engaged in cultural programs and sport activities to adopt peaceful co-existence in the IDP camp.

“We used to have this traditional show before Covid-19 outbreak until it was closed due to Covid-19 lockdown but IOM Mental health and psychosocial support department has provided us with dancing materials and drums.” he added.

The psychosocial support department assistant for International Organization for migration (IOM), Kueth Geng said his organization will continue to support cultural shows to reduce trauma and stress among the youths.

“What we have witnessed was that the conflicting youths came together during the cultural show, as you see they are dancing together specially the two guys in the picture above who are dancing together are not believed to be friends.” Geng said.
