The South Sudan police have arrested about 34 suspected armed criminals in the capital, Juba following operation conducted within the last two weeks.
Lt. Gen. Majak Akec Malok, the Inspector General of Police told journalists on Monday that among the suspects include, members of the security forces and foreign nationals.
He said more than 40 stolen motorcycles and different types of rifles including AK-47, pistols and ammunitions were recovered from the suspects.
“I warn the criminals still operating that we are not sleeping, we will do whatever we can to ensure citizens live in peace,” Akec said.
“They must face the law and I call on the judiciary to execute their mandate maximally to ensure no one found guilty should get out of the prison and continue robbing people,” he added.
On his part, the Central Equatorial Police Commissioner, Gen. Nicola Dimo Biajo said police will continue cracking down on criminals to end their activities in the city.
“The case of robbing and killing Boda-boda riders is high, and we are going to exert more efforts to make sure that all the stolen motorcycles are confiscated,” Dimo said.
In February, police arrested over 40 members of a notorious youth gang for robberies and petty theft.
South Sudan’s economy is currently struggling amid high inflation that has led to devaluation of the local pound against the U.S dollar.
