South Sudan’s government on Tuesday signed an agreement with the African Development to get $14 million from the African Development bank.
The Finance Ministry says the money will help government become stronger.
“The importance of this will be to build our line ministries such as Ministry of Trade, Ministry of Investment, Ministry of Mining and National Bureau of Statistics.” Said the undersecretary, Ministry of Finance and Planning, Ochum Kharlo Geneus
“The first grant of $2.7 million is to support emergency production of food and it’s also focusing on buying seeds, the importance of this $2.7 million is that it focuses on the $ 8.1 million for the same purpose which the bank provided in August this year.” Said African Development Bank’s Country Mnanager, South Sudan Mr. Themba Bhebhe.
Mr. Themba further said, the rest of the money is scheduled to go on economic governance, which is to build capacity of those in economic ministries at the national and state government levels.
He said 75 percent of the project will be implemented by the United Nations Development Funds, (UNDP) United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization and 25 percent will be implemented by the ministries involved.
The bank says it has approved $21 for support to South Sudan’s government.
The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) is urging the public to engage in agriculture.
“With the peace, our hope as FAO is that the country can exits from the food aid.” said Meshack Malo, FAO Representative in South Sudan.
The project runs from 2022 to 2026.
