Raging floods maroon Rubkona airstrip

By Ruot George

The main road connecting Rubkona airstrip to its twin city Bentiu has been cut off by flooding.

The engineering unit of the United Nation Mission in South Sudan – UNMISS is struggling to keep the airstrip for humanitarian provision of services.

A video recorded by an aid worker shows the UN and humanitarian vehicles moving through water to access the airstrip.

Unity State is one of the oil regions in the county.

South Sudan relies on oil proceeds to finance 98 percent of its budget.

Unity State Governor Dr. Joseph Manytuil told Journalists who visited Bentiu in September that all the seven counties are cut off from the state headquarters.

Manytuil said affected locals have moved to Bentiu, state capital.

The national government in Juba allocates 5 percent share of oil proceeds to the producing states including Unity State to support operations.
