The government said on Tuesday that about 1.9 million people have been affected by flash floods this year.
Dr. Manase Lomole Waya, Chairperson for Relief and Rehabilitation Commission (RRC) on Tuesday revealed this while receiving relief food donated by Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) at Juba International Airport.
“The number of people affected by the flood is very high, RRC put it at 1.9 million people that are affected by floods in our country today,” said Lomole.
The most affected states include Western Bahr el Ghazal, Warrap, Unity, and Western Equatoria.
“The most highly affected states include Western Bahr el Ghazal with 251,763, Warrap State 28,133, Unity State have 123,966 people affected, western Equatoria with 11,403 people affected by floods,” he said.
As of October 2022, about 900,000 people were affected by floods according to a report published by the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs.
UNOCHA noted that Jonglei, Unity, and Upper Nile states were the worst affected areas by the flooding that started in May due to their proximity to the Nile and Lol rivers and the Sudd marshlands.
It added the widespread flooding continued to impact 835,000 people and their livelihoods in 33 counties out of 78 across the country as of December 8.
