Mundri farmers agree 30 days deal to allow Mundari herders evacuate cattle

The agrarian community of Mundri in Western Equatoria State has agreed 30 days deal to allow Mundari cattle keepers from Tali in Terekeka County to evacuate their cattle.

“The dialogue resolved that the cattle herders of Tali in Terekeka County who migrated from Central Equatorial State through Juba, Lainya and Yei because of internal conflicts among themselves and shortage of water should be allowed to temporarily stay in greater Mundri areas and peaceful passage,” said a statement issued at the end of community peace dialogue in Mundri.

The communities in greater Mundri including Mvolo County, Mundri West and Mundri East and Mundari community of Tali payam in Terekeka County concluded a two- days community peace dialogue on March 31, 2023 to resolve cattle related conflicts in Mundri.

It disclosed that livestock should be moved to Tali by April 30, 2023 to ensure agricultural activities in greater Mundri are not disrupted.

It noted that cattle camp chiefs and payam chiefs should immediately go to cattle camps to convene meetings to raise awareness and ensure the youth respect the local people.

In early 2022, widespread floods across the country forced cattle herders from Jonglei to move to Central Equatoria, and Eastern Equatoria States in search of pasture for their animals to graze sparking disputes between the farming communities and cattle herders in Equatoria region.
