The Council of Ministers has directed the national ministries of agriculture, humanitarian affairs and animal resources to prepare feasible projects in order to get funding from the 3.7 billion U.S dollar budget provided by the World Food Program (WFP) for South Sudan.
In November, WFP approved this funding under it’s 2023-2025 strategic plan for South Sudan. The strategy goes beyond food distribution to include core issues like capacity building and resilience.
Speaking to journalists on Friday in Juba after the cabinet meeting, Michael Makuei Lueth the Minister of Information hailed Rebecca Nyandeng De Mabior, the Vice President for Youth and Gender Cluster for negotiating the deal with WFP during her recent visit to Rome, Italy.
Makuei disclosed the money will be used to support projects on mitigating climatic shocks like floods, and also rejuvenating the untapped agricultural sector.
In addition, he said projects on disaster management will be funded.
“All the ministries were directed to read that report and pick the area of their concerns, and start to develop them in form of projects,” said Makuei.
“The areas are very clear, they are on agriculture, humanitarian affairs and Animal resources, and these will prepare their projects based on those areas and present them for consideration,” he disclosed.
The funding was allocated during the mid-November meeting between Vice President Rebecca Nyandeng with the executive board of WFP in Rome.
The office of the Vice President upon her return home issued a statement, saying that the funds will be used to provide emergency food assistance to needy populations, and build the capacity and resilience of communities.
