The Indian Embassy in collaboration with the Indian Association in South Sudan on Saturday held a cultural festival to enhance cultural ties between the Indian diaspora and South Sudanese.
Vishnu Kumar Sharma, the Indian Ambassador to South Sudan said celebration of the festivals of Pongal, Makar Sankranti and Lohri are aimed at promoting cultural ties of Indian diaspora with the native country.
“The festivals of India have their role in uniting the people, this event is part of India’s socio-cultural and political identity, we are motivated to fulfill the vision of our Prime Minister,” he said.
Sharma also disclosed that India is celebrating 75 years of its independence, adding that the cultural festival is an embodiment of all that is progressive about India’s socio-cultural, economic and political identity.
The event was attended by 100 Indian community members and friends of India.
Lt. Gen. Mohan Subramanian, the UN Peacekeeping Mission Commander was the guest of honour.
Music on the occasion included, foot tapping Indian music with songs playing in the background, a number of guests enthusiastically joined the group dance and a regional traditional dance was also performed by the Indian contingent from UNMISS.
