The Directorate for Civil Registry, Nationality, Passport and Immigration has been hailed for efforts to ensure South Sudanese have personal identification documents.
The ID4Africa Movement an NGO has praised the immigration department for printing thousands of identity documents and passports for citizens to enable them access services across the world.
“ID 4 Africa has written a letter of appreciation, saying it is the first time for South Sudan to print documents in big quantity. This year we will do more than this because the issue of identity is a concern in the world,” said Lt.Gen Atem Marol Biar, the Director General for Immigration department during press conference on Monday in Juba.
Marol said they printed 84,917 passports last year alone.
He disclosed they printed 63,334 regular passports for adults, 13,489 for children, and 7,083 special passports, 401 business, 610 official and 1,316 diplomatic passports.
Marol added that they are planning to increase issuance of passports and nationality documents for South Sudanese.
Founded in 2014, ID4Africa is an NGO Movement that accompanies African nations on their journeys to develop robust and responsible identity ecosystems in the service of development and humanitarian action.
The ID4Africa Movement is driven by the need to establish identity-for-all, not just as a legal right (consistent with SDG 16.9), but also as a practical necessity to enable inclusive access to services in Africa.
“ID4Africa believes that service-oriented identity ecosystems built on the respect of privacy and human rights are essential for growth of digital economies and will become even more crucial as African countries move to implement the provisions of the African Continental Free Trade Agreement (AfCTA)” said a statement on it’s website.
