Christian Agency for Peace and Development(CAPaD) a Faith-based national organization operating in South Sudan, joined the World in the Commemoration of the International day for women.
This year’s theme is #Embrace Equity. The theme echoes fairness in the society and calls for the elimination of imbalances namely biases, stereotypes and exclusions that women face on constant basis.
Speaking at the opening session of the commemoration conference organized by South Sudan Youth Organization Coalition, Peter Malir Biar, the Executive Director of CAPaD, who’s also the chairperson of the coalition, decried women’s rights violations. These include right to liberty, civi space, property, humanitarian access among others
The activist then appealed to the stakeholders across South Sudan to prioritize women’s and girls’ rights while moving forward.
“We need to secure the space for women and girls if we should guarantee peace, security and development for all and sustain the implementation of the revitalized peace agreement” he underscored while delivering his speech during the event in Juba.
Over 80 youth from different walks across the country participated in the event including people with disabilities. Hon. Yar Telar Deng, a Member of Parliament at the National Transitional Legislative Assembly and other activists participated at the event.
Ruth Nyalel, the Executive Director at African Indigenous Women Empowerment said there was a need for women to embrace each other during their day.
“You can buy a flower and give it to your mother or your sister. Tell them, this is yours to mark this day”. “I am standing in solidarity with those women in the local areas. Those women who didn’t know about their rights”, she noted.
International Women’s Day is a global holiday celebrated annually on March 8, as a focal point in the women’s rights reflection; bringing attention to abuse-related issues against women. These include gender inequalities, reproductive rights and other abuses.
