Army chief tightens security clearance for aircrafts to Abyei

The Chief of Defense for South Sudan People’s Defense Force (SSPDF) has ordered security clearance for all flights to Agok area of Abyei Administrative Area due to ongoing insecurity.

Santino Deng Wol, the SSPDF CDF in his statement dated October 27, 2022, said the move is aimed at preventing proliferation of ammunitions and weapons in Agok.

“Please, inform all security sector institutions and components operating in Juba international Airport to grant all aircrafts due to Agok on commercial or humanitarian, a greenlight after thorough search to be certain these flights carry no munitions or weapons of wars,” said Wol.

Wol’s latest directive rescinds Capt.Subek John David Dada, the Chief Executive Officer for South Sudan Civil Aviation Authority earlier directive prohibiting flights to Agok for security reasons.

On 10 February, heavy clashes erupted in Agok town between Ngok Dinka and Twic community of Warrap State forcing thousands of people to flee the area.

Despite a lull in fighting, the United Nations Interim Force for Abye (UNISFA) on 26th September issued statement expressing alarm over renewed clashes between Twic and Ngok Dinka communities in Agok, near Abyei town.
