The Warrap State government has reassured the visiting team from the United Nations human rights division of the government’s commitment to respect human rights and the rule of law.
Aluel Garang, the Acting Governor of Warrap State, said on Monday in Kuajok town while meeting with the UN team led by Musa Yerro Gassama, the representative of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights in South Sudan.
She told the team that the State government that is committed to follow due process of the justice system.
For his part, Gassama said they visited Warrap State to acquaint themselves with the human rights situation and the effectiveness of the judicial system.
He was accompanied by the human rights team and the head of the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) field office in Kuajok.
In February 2024, the Governor of Warrap State Kuol Muor Muor signed into law the Conflict Resolution and Sustainable Development Act, 2024, also known as the Warrap State Green Book, which provides for execution by firing squad of any murderer convicted by tribunal, or any person found guilty by a competent special mobile court to have raided cattle or robbed other valuable assets using firearms.
The 2023 country report on human rights released by UNMISS revealed that significant human rights issues such as extrajudicial killings, enforced disappearance, harsh and life-threatening prison conditions and serious problems with the independence of the judiciary are prevalent in the country.
