Police in Northern Bahr El Ghazal state broke up a youth union meeting on Tuesday and arrested three youth leaders.
The deputy spokesperson of Northern Bahr El Ghazal Youth Union, Deng Atuop Deng said the chairperson of the youth union Tito Awen Bol and two of his colleagues were arrested at Railway hotel in Aweil town.
Atuop said the chairperson and his colleagues were accused of not seeking permission from national security services (NSS) to hold the meeting.
“Now they have taken Tito Awen and they have smacked him in the face. They have beaten him up and they were telling him why he held the meeting without notifying the security apparatus,” Atuop said.
“We told them that we had delivered letters to all relevant institutions like NSS, police and the state government, but the detectives didn’t heed to our explanation,” he added.
Atuop said they are working to ensure that the chairperson and his other two colleagues are released by security agents.
The Northern Bahr El Ghazal minister of information, William Anyuon Kuol said he was not aware of the arrests.
The youth union chairperson Tito Awen Bol was recently suspended by some members of the youth union who had accused him of mismanaging finances of the youth union.
