Several people living in suburbs of Aweil town such as Hai-zalala and Naifasha are frightened and anxious following the recent rise in cases of theft by machete wielding thugs.
Dut Garang, a resident of Hai-Zalala said on Thursday that the thugs use machetes and knives to attack people in their houses late in the night. He said they snatch valuables such as phones and also cash.
“At night they steal valuables like phones and money. What we are witnessing has not been there before in this town,” he told Juba Echo in Aweil town.
He said the thugs are particularly active along the Naifasha and Ariak-riak area where they waylay their unsuspecting victims.
Another resident Adut Deng Bol, said she lost her 25,000 SSP recently to the thugs.
She appealed to the Northern Bah El Ghazal authorities to crackdown on the thugs.
Capt. Guot Guot Akol, the Northern Bahr El Ghazal police spokesperson acknowledged the presence of the thugs.
He appealed to the public to always tip the police about any incident involving these thugs so that they can be apprehended.
