A member of Eastern Equatoria state legislative assembly has urged the national government and humanitarian agencies to provide urgent assistance to the hungry population in his constituency.
Visor Likali Olum, the MP representing Lafon County told The Juba Echo on Tuesday, that hunger has pushed most of his people into neighboring states, including some who have fled to Uganda in search of food.
“There is very serious hunger which has hit hard the residents of Lafon, we still do not have the statistics but hunger is a result of drought,” Olum said.
He said some of his people have already crossed into Kenya and Uganda.
Olum revealed that combination of heavy floods and drought since 2022, are responsible for causing the dire humanitarian situation in Lafon County.
“We are calling for an urgent humanitarian intervention, women and children are the most affected by the long dry spell, there are no services, there is no food as humanitarian agencies have suspended operation in Lafon County,” he said.
