Police in Aweil North County have killed 40 stray dogs in a bid to mitigate dog bites.
The Commissioner of Aweil North County, Kiir Chan Wol said that they killed the dogs on Thursday morning at Gok-Machar.
Chan said that they had warned the public to vaccinate their dogs prior to the operation.
“We as authorities have been asking the public to vaccinate their dogs but they never accepted. So all dogs that we find loitering in the market are what we have been targeting,” he told Juba Echo.
Northern Bahr El Ghazal state has recently witnessed spike in rabies cases due to dog bites.
Garang Wol Dut, a resident of Aweil town said he was relieved in the aftermath of the police operation because his son was recently bitten by a stray dog.
“My Child was bitten by a dog and it cost me a lot of money to get him treated, I managed to go to Aweil town where I got the anti-rabies vaccines in the pharmacy, I sold away the heifer to get him treated. The move by the authorities to kill the dogs without owners is good,” Dut said
