The Commissioner of Aweil East County Kharbino Thiep Tong on Thursday called on parents to take care of their families to prevent their children from ending up on the streets of Aweil town.
“I have heard from the international organizations about the rising number of street children in Aweil town. We have learnt that children fcrom Madhol Payam makes up the highest number on our streets,” Thiep said.
Thiep was speaking on Thursday at a funeral of one of the elders in Madhol payam.
He said that he has held closed door meeting with international organizations about the protection of these children.
Thiep reminded parents to take care of their children at home, adding that it’s also the responsibility to enroll them in school.
“I want to tell you to take care of your children despite the poverty you have in your homes. The current economic situation will one day improve. If you allow children to go to the streets they will face problems like being killed,” he cautioned.
Most of the towns in South Sudan are beaming with street children, due to years of conflicts that have led to killing of tens of thousands and displacement of millions of people from their homes.
