Government targets revenue windfall as it moves to regulate transport sector

The national government has ordered owners of public transport sector to be registered as it targets to increase revenue collection from the sector.

This was revealed by Simon Lasu Michael, the Chairperson of the South Sudan General Transport Workers Trade Union during a press conference held in Juba on Tuesday.

“The Minister of Transport, Madut Biar Yel has authorized the South Sudan general transport workers trade union to control, regulate and supervise access, movement and arrivals and departure of all transport,” Michael said.

He said the directive aims to reorganize the transport sector to make it’s performance efficient.

Michael said the transport union should ensure safety and control of public transport sector, adding the safety and control of public transport is necessary for control of movement within and across borders.

“We need to ensure the safety and control of public transport, mainly supervision and control of intra-states, inter states and cross border operations and any other transport activities that may be deemed necessary must be executed in accordance with the laws,” he added.

The minister’s directive to the management of transport sector was issued last week.
