Returnee woman nearly starves to death in Aweil East

By Hou Akot Hou

A returnee woman in Majok-Yithiou area of Aweil East County in Northern Bahr El Gazal State nearly starved to death last week after spending more than three days without food.

The woman in her 40’s was saved on Friday by Joseph Mamer Manot , the Bishop of the Episcopal Church of Sudan in Wanyjok Diocese.

“She was almost dying as children flanked her and the residents. She took days without food,” Manot told Juba Echo on Saturday in Aweil town.

Manot said his team travelled to Majok-Yithiou to assess the condition of the people who recently fled ongoing conflict in neighboring Sudan. The majority of returnees are South Sudanese who are said to be living in deplorable conditions.

The United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR) said more than 32,000 people have entered into the border areas of Renk County and Aweil East County since fighting broke out in Sudan on April 15.
