Aweil authorities said they have received 60 plastic pit latrine covers from partners they hope to distribute to residents ahead of the rainy season to mitigate cholera outbreak.
Dut Deng Gabriel, the Director for Water and Sanitation in the Ministry of Water Resources and Rural Development in Northern Bhar El Ghazal State, said they want people in Aweil town to turn up to receive them.
“People defecate in the open and rains are starting, I wrote a request to partners and they have approved for us 60 plastic covers known as slap for use in constructing pit latrines,” Deng told journalists in Aweil town on Tuesday.
“So I want people to come for registration to get these before I ask for more,” he added.
Deng said they received these plastic covers from the Center for Emergency and Development Support (CEDS), a local national NGO.
He said they have been holding meetings with the local residents to end open defecation.
Open defecation is the major cause of cholera in Northern Bhar El Ghazal State and States in South Sudan.
